Learning to be Okay at Things

This is a follow on from last week’s post about The Value of Not Being Good at Things. I have been pretty much doing nothing but knitting in my spare time. I’ve been spending my mornings doing a few stitches, then getting breakfast and going about my day and doing a few stitches before I go to bed. And I sucked so much when I first started.
This is what my first attempt turned into:

It’s got a lot of holes, dropped stitches, the edges aren’t pretty and I increased and decreased stitches. I struggled to remember how to do the stitches and had weird frayed bits of yarn all over the place too which didn’t help my confidence. I thought I was doing so terribly and that I would never manage anything neat. Ever.
Then, all of a sudden it clicked. I asked a friend and they told me how I was increasing stitches, I asked my mam how to neaten up the edges and she gave me some really good advice that helped me to fix that problem too. I looked up some tutorials online and copied their movements step by step and made it.
What I made wasn’t beautiful, it doesn’t look perfect but the point is that I learned. I spent my time improving and making mistakes and I am keeping that little rectangle-ish thing I made because I made it! I did something! I’ve went from not knowing how to do any of this, to doing it but not doing it well and now …

Something that actually looks like a decent bit of knitting! The edges are neat, I’ve not dropped a stitch yet (that I haven’t fixed!) and the stitches haven’t increased! I started with 24 stitches and I’m still on 24 stitches. I’ve learned how to do the purl stitch and I’m doing a mix of that and knit stitch. It looks even and I am so proud of how far I’ve came since the 7th February.
I’m not amazing at knitting but I don't need to be, for me I’m just glad that I’m learning something new. I’ve been talking to my mam and a few friends and I’m enjoying that learning and bonding with it. I want to improve but for now I’m just glad that I’m doing okay at it.
