App Review: Zombie Run

Updated: Feb 27, 2021

So this week’s app review of Zombie Run, and it's a little bit different. You may be wondering why I’m suggesting this in the middle of all of the apps about productivity and organisation, well, the answer is that it’s fun. My important lesson of the week is that you can’t go at 100% all of the time or you’re going to burn out. It’ll end up being too much for you.

So, a way to combat that is to take breaks. Go outside (even in the winter) and get some fresh air, and just clear your head from everything for 15 minutes. And that’s what this app does well. You put in your headphones and walk and it will go through a story with you; as you walk you collect supplies which can be used to upgrade your base. The storyline is honestly one of the best I have seen (listened to?) and the app is super simple to use. At first I didn’t see the appeal but then after using it for a week while I was walking to and from work I fell in love. I’ve kept using it and found I actually walk quicker while I’m listening.

You play as a character called Runner 5, and you are on your way to one of the last known outposts after the zombie epidemic. Able Township is in need of supplies, help rescuing survivors and defending their home, and as a runner, you can help. The story is very immersive and as I’m walking to work I get caught up in it, getting excited for the next walk I do where I can listen to the next mission.

There are different modes, one of which means that whenever you hear a zombie approaching you need to speed up but you can easily enjoy the game without that enabled. I struggle to run for any distance, my legs don’t like it too much when I do, so I have it set to just play the story and measure how far I walk and over what time.

There are a few downsides like an unskippable advert at the start of each mission and the GPS feature not always working perfectly, but overall I don’t mind those things because the rest of the app is so good. It made me want to walk places more. And I have been. I’ve noticed such a difference since I started using the app – I can walk for half an hour without it feeling like a massive effort, 45 minutes is a little tiring but do-able and I managed to walk for an entire hour with a brief stop. It’s an app that anyone with any skill level can use.
