15 Things I’ve learned Since Moving Out

Updated: Feb 26, 2021

This post isn’t about every little detail I’ve learned since I moved out of my parents house, moved countries and moved in with my partner because that would take up far too much time. This is more of a collection of the little things I can’t remember being told when I moved out first.

  1. It’s always okay to ask for help. Whether that’s “I don’t understand this letter that came through the door” or “can you reach the top shelf because I can’t” types of help.

  2. Similarly to that last point, you can ask for help with household tasks. Especially ones you’re not as familiar/ comfortable with. I don’t like doing the laundry because I never remember how to put it on, what goes with what and so on. So I keep asking for help and writing down what I’m told

  3. But I love wiping down benches, mopping and sweeping. So I’ve worked out with my partner that I’ll do more of that stuff (if he helps me occasionally when it’s getting too much) if he can take over some of the other more DIY heavy things.

  4. Nothing stays clean for long. That isn’t because you’re failing, it’s just what happens and that’s alright.

  5. Sometimes you just need to walk away from a task and come back to it with a fresh head.

  6. Always keep tea supplies well stocked.

  7. Have a step handy for when you need to reach things on that top shelf and you’re on your own.

  8. Get loyalty cards. You will love yourself when you get that free coffee before work on a cold day.

  9. If you’re moving stuff into your house it’s going to get super messy before it gets clean again and that’s okay.

  10. Never underestimate the power of a good upbeat song when you’re cleaning or doing any task. Load up your music player, put that volume loud and dance.

  11. Don’t forget to get things to brighten your home. Of course get the essentials first but if you want that sunflower picture to brighten your wall then get it.

  12. Nobody is stopping you eating your desert first and there’s some days when that’s just the best thing in the world

  13. If you’ve got a space to open one up then get an old towel and a clothes horse to dry your clothes on after washing them. It saves electricity/ water and if you don’t have a tumble dryer/ it’s small then this can take the pressure off drying clothes.

  14. Those bags with all the other plastic bags in? Yeah you’re going to have one of those even if you didn’t plan on it.

  15. It’ll take a while to get settled into things. You won’t be going out doing a proper weekly shop at first, the washing will be done as and when, same with the cleaning. Those things take time.

  16. And one more because I’m feeling generous. Don’t compare yourself to other people. They’ve been doing it a lot longer than you, or they’ve been given a bit more help, or they’ve not had as much, or they have different circumstances. It’s all okay, take things at your own pace.
