Christmastime and working

I think it’s something every student knows a great deal about, feeling like you’re not getting a proper Christmas because you’re working on essays and studying and actually working right up until Christmas Day and then have to go right back to doing it all the day after. It feels like you have no time to yourself to actually enjoy sitting down and watching those cheesy Christmas films on TV, about wrapping presents and putting up decorations. It’s all done in a rush so that you can get back to the thing that’s made out to be more important, school.
At least that’s how I felt and still feel.
If I’m not working on something academic before Christmas day I feel like I’m letting myself down and not doing enough. Even on Christmas Day itself I’ve struggled to not get out my notes and start working on things in the time between opening gifts and people arriving for dinner.
“This year,” I’ve said each and every year, “will be different.” I’ve got so much to do with submissions and wanting to make sure they’re perfect, even if I have been working on these things since September each year. I get out as many books from the libraries before they close for Christmas, spend hours in front of my computer gathering all of the research so I can sit down over the break to write these essays, or put the finishing touches to them. I know at some point I’ll be in a full time job and not necessarily be writing but working over Christmas, but I have a feeling that it will feel different.
University isn’t just a case of spending X amount of time in class and X amount of time studying and then outside those hours you’re completely free. It seeps into everything. I’ve woken up, grabbed my phone while trying to not wake up my partner to write a bit more of my essay in the middle of the night. I’ve been out with friends trying to have a good time and instead I’m sat there thinking about the next section of what I’m working on. It isn’t a clean cut thing, and that’s so much worse over a time where you’re all about the family time and getting all curled up on couches under blankets to watch movies.
Hey! Tara here, and thanks for checking out my blog. I update every Tuesday with posts about studying tips, advice and I also talk about productivity and organisation too. If you want to keep up to date with my latest blog posts I’d love it if you subscribed to this blog.
