Keeping Your Room Organised

Updated: Feb 26, 2021

I love planning for things and organising things but I always end up searching for tips on keeping your room organised. Honestly I probably spend more time planning for essays than I do actually writing them. So, for this week I decided to share some things that have helped me to be more organised with what’s in my room and where it is.

Most things have a box and that box is labelled.

This is the one that probably helps me most. In my cupboard in my room I have many boxes and I know exactly what’s in each of them. I have:

  1. A box for my chargers and cables and only them

  2. A small set of boxes to keep stationary in

  3. A plastic box to keep my fabric in

  4. My sewing kit box

  5. Spare notebooks box

  6. Gaming consoles / games box

Now obviously this isn’t everything in my cupboard but they take up the most space and these boxes can be stacked. The games consoles don’t get used as much so the fabric box goes on top of them, and so on. This is a great way to save space but also to stop myself losing things in the cupboard. I know what’s inside every single box.

Gifts box!

Okay this a relatively new one for me but I am loving using it. So I buy gifts throughout the year when I see them for people because I don’t want to spend that much on the run up to Christmas and they go in the ‘gift box’. At the moment it’s just a large box from Amazon that someone’s gift came in one year and I keep it for this purpose. I know where each gift is and who it’s for – no last minute rushing, no tearing my room apart to find gifts anymore.

Post it notes

I use these for marking things that I’m not sure if I still use. If I’ve had a clear out and kept things out on my desk they get post it notes – if I still haven’t used the post it note-d things within a month then they go in the ‘to be scrapped’ pile.

Leave your laundry basket lid open

This has helped me so much to actually start putting clothes in there when it’s in my room. I usually leave mine on the landing (since there’s enough space) and close the lid now but if it’s ever in my room for some reason the lid is open.

Invest in a good file/ folder for your important documents

This comes in two parts. Have a folder for your important documents and have a space on your desk in a paper organiser for the things you’re going to be using within that week. I keep letters for appointments in this and also when I’m working on assignments the notes go in the back of it. That way I know everything is there ready for me.

If you have the space store things underneath your bed or on your wardrobe

I have space on the top of my wardrobe to fit some clothes I don’t really wear in one of those bags and to also put my suitcase on top so I save so much space not just in my room but also in my drawers. Under my bed I have my Little Box Of Memories, and two boxes which roll out from underneath that I can store things in. Currently I have one for my main hobby, and the other one to store my shoes and bags. They leave a lot of space under my bed too so I could always get another box to put under my bed should I need it too.

Keep a note of what you put where

By this I mean if you always chuck your clothes in front of your cupboard after you’ve worn them, or you always put your borrowed library books on a specific shelf. Make a note of these things. See if you can organise your room so that you have your laundry basket near your cupboard or that you clear a specific place for books you don’t own.
